Dahabshiil Mental Health Awareness - May 2022

The goal of this event was to begin breaking the deeply rooted stigma surrounding mental health within the Somali community—a topic that has often been overlooked or misunderstood due to cultural norms, misinformation, and lack of access to resources. By creating a safe and welcoming space, we aimed to foster open, honest conversations where individuals could share their experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another. It was an opportunity to promote mutual understanding and emphasise that mental health affects us all, whether directly through personal struggles or indirectly through the experiences of friends, family, or community members.

As part of the Mental Health Forum, we were honoured to host a panel of professionals from the Somali community, including therapists, counsellors, and advocates. Their presence was not only inspiring but also essential in bridging the gap between cultural understanding and mental health awareness. They generously shared their knowledge, personal stories, and professional insights—shedding light on the challenges faced by many within our community and offering practical tools for self-care, healing, and advocacy. Through their contributions, guests were empowered to rethink preconceived notions about mental health and encouraged to support both themselves and their loved ones in seeking help when needed.

The event drew a diverse and vibrant crowd, representing a wide range of ages, professions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Seeing so many people come together—united by a shared commitment to growth, healing, and solidarity—was truly heartening. The atmosphere was filled with empathy, strength, and a collective desire for change. It reminded us that while the journey to destigmatize mental health is ongoing, it is possible when we work together, speak openly, and support one another with compassion and understanding.
